Disk not ejected Properly

I keep getting "disk not ejected properly" for my backup disk. Although I have not disconnected the backup drive. I have already unchecked put disk to sleep in energy saver, but no change. Also the system doesn't recognise the disk after that, so it stops backing up.

Using El Capitan 10.11.5 on iMac 2015.

Happy Wednesday, sunsgp!

It sounds like you're receiving a message that your external disk used for backing up is being unexpectedly disconnected. That's not great! It's important to be able to successfully complete backups. I have a few solutions to help in this case.

If you haven't already done so, be sure that the cable connecting your iMac to your external disc is secured tightly. A loose connection may unexpectedly disconnect the external drive. To ensure that this isn't a problem with only one port, it may also be a good idea to try using a different port with this drive if there is one available.

Beyond that, a quick reset to the System Management Controller may help. Here's how to complete that step:

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If you continue to see an issue, be sure to list all of the steps you were able to complete in your reply. Cheers!

sunsgp,

One possible cause of these symptoms would be that the external disk is failing or that the connection to the external disk has a hardware issue such as the port being worn.

Do you experience these symptoms with multiple external drives, or does this only occur with this drive? If these symptoms only occur with one drive, the drive itself may be the root of the issue. I'd recommend using another disk to create backups if you suspect the external disk might be failing.

If you experience these symptoms with multiple external drives, utilize another user account on your iMac to test if this is an issue specific to the account you're using. Here's how:

Take care!
